If statistics are to be believed, the number of people registered for Times of India’s Teach India movement is much higher than actual vacancies that the related NGOs have. They are all volunteers (and therefore without any pay) who would be teaching at least for three months at a place suitable for them and the linked NGO. This response is really encouraging and shows that teaching is not something that youth of the nation abhors. But how about teaching as a profession? Why is it that teaching has failed to become a dream job for most of young people in India? Among others, this talent crunch is acute in management and technology sectors. The newly set up IITs would have to face the real music due to non availability of qualified faculty members. The “noble profession” tag no longer holds much water and it is high time we reflected seriously on making teaching an attractive profession. Can some of the following measures help? a. Improve the quality of teacher’s life: For this to happen a thicker salary package is must. Teachers should never feel inferior to other professionals in terms of income. b. Scope for Building Capability: Capability can never be a final product. Teachers should be given enough opportunity to further build their capability. c. Break the monotony: Monotony is a complain that I hear from most of my teacher friends. Just because some one enjoys teaching should not lead us to assume that he or she require no recreation and other material pleasures. d. Treat them as humans: Teachers, in Indian tradition, are often elevated to some kind of a spiritual figure. This, I strongly feel, puts lots of unnecessary burden on a teacher’s life. Let’s treat them as humans with all basic entitlements. e. No negative publicity please: Out of their frustration, teachers often resort to making negative publicity of their own profession in front of impressionable young minds. While their complains are often genuine, they should be brought to the right platform for deliberation. |

All of us have fond memories of the fun and merriment on teacher’s day during our good old school days. This was the time we all got together to organize a day full of laughter and enjoyment for our dear loving teachers. Even though we have come a long way since our school days, teachers day memories will always be special. |

Teacher’s day is no doubt the best occasion to make your teacher feel her importance in your life. She has always been there for you at the time of need. It’s the perfect time of the year to make her feel that she is really important to you. It won’t be a bad idea to plan a surprise party for her. The gift shops are packed with plenty of gift items to choose from. Try to select the one that best suits her taste. If she is a lover of old classics then a CD collection of Hindi classic songs would be a great choice. Teacher’s day cards are specially meant for this day and always make it a point to offer the best one. |

I had never understood the logic of paying so much respect to the teachers as my parents wanted to. Especially after I had entered into an argument with our Social Studies teacher at VI th standard (I was trembling at the idea of showing my unit test copy to my father as I had scored 14 out of 20 and my point was that Pankaj Choudhury did not teach all the topics from which questions were asked), my father kept playing the record that teachers occupy the third important place in human life right after God and parents. I had to swallow the arguments and narrations, but could never digest them properly. Until perhaps I met Nivedita Menon while pursuing my M.A. in Political Science from Delhi University. I found her really different from all other teachers that I had met. What attracted me most was her sincerity and eloquence. From providing essential and related readings to answering all the questions, she had done it all. But it is not that I had not met any other person who could teach as nicely as Nivi. But the way she communicated to each one of us was different. She made us feel that each one of the class was equally important. It is not that she had applied one uniform standard. Her approach was different, and yet egalitarian. It would be really very long if I continue. So let me put a stop and thank her on the coming teacher’s day! Thank you Ma’am for everything that you have taught us and also for everything that I have learned from you. I am still not convinced that all teachers deserve the respect that the Indian tradition espouse, but I have realized that if not all, some teachers do build lives. |

cotton trousers look extremely good on young girls. Cotton trousers with knitted waist and smart finish are very comfortable and ideal for regular wear. Moreover, these are also considered as formal wears. Off-white trousers when worn with brown shirts give a classy look. Black and white cotton trousers are also quite popular among young girls. It won’t be a bad idea to purchase some cotton trousers from time ahead so that you can wear those in your college. |
