Corporal Punishment for Children

Corporal Punishment should be abolished from school. Instances of teachers throwing dusters at students, or children being kept standing in scorching sun have been reported. In some cases the teachers are removed from duty, but in most cases they escape any type of punishment.

It is true that there are certain unruly students who do not listen easily or pay attention in class. Children can always be taught to behave properly. The environment in home is a key determinant of a child’s behaviour and attitude. Too mush of indulgence in home leads to a child becoming adamant. Many parents have the habit of listening to all what the child demands which has a harmful effect on his proper development. A boy or girls must be trained to listen to instructions. On disobeying these instructions punishment in the way of depriving an ice-cream or toy could be apt. At school he could be made to kneel down or stand outside the class room under the watchful eye of a teacher.

Teachers with a tendency of beating students should be expelled and not given opportunity to teach at least in junior schools. They also might need to go through rehabilitation programmes.

Promotion Exams for K. G. and Primary Children

It is a torture to put a child through a promotion exam at the end of every academic year. Not only does it burden the child but also creates differences between them. Instead a continuous process of evaluation should exist where academic brilliance will be a part. The education system in India practically tests a child’s academic brilliance, and a child’s capability is based on this particular ability only. Discretion, attitude, inquisitiveness, creative aptitude, analytical skills, and interests in games are never given importance and often ignored during formal schooling.

It is a known fact that all academically brilliant students may not be successful professionally. Similarly all those successful in professional life might have been academically unsound. Though home always remains the primary place of a child’s education, the school has a significant role in shaping a kid’s a career. Schools go into the usual practice of setting loads of homework without bothering to care whether the child has understood his lesson or not. This homework if not submitted in time result in the child being punished. There absolutely is no effort on the part of the teacher to explain the lesson properly to all students. For better understanding of the lessons parents are forced appoint private tutors for their children even in the primary school level.

This troubling of the child could be removed by the practice of promotional exams are removed at least in the primary level if not in the middle school classes. The practice of ranking should be removed and evaluation reports instead of progress reports should be given. For weaker students, special counseling and more interaction between the parents and teachers should be held.

Learners- the big and small of it

Learners today constitute of both children and adults. It will be interesting to know what are the main features that are unique to an adult learner and for a child. While children have a lesser capacity to contribute as a knowledge resource to the instructor their focus is on what they can add to their lack of understanding. An adult learner on the other hand already has a knowledge base and is more keen to add to his understanding of a field of study. Moreover children have a long term goal when they are part of a study program but for adults they look for immediate application of the information received either professionally or personally. As an instructor to children, the individual has to bear in mind that the students will try to believe the information that he provides but someone who is teaching a class of adult learners should be ready to face conflicting views and should attempt to prove what he says. Another significant point of difference is that children usually trust someone to tell them what needs to be learnt but an adult learner is the decision maker on his choice of course. This aspect of the need for relying on the teacher and need for independence is what actually differentiates a child learner from an adult learner. The rapport and familiarity with the instructor also affects the performance and interest of children when they study while an adult learner is more interested in the area and medium of study. Getting familiar with the unique learning styles, needs and behavior of the learner would help the instructor to read the minds and understand the character of the class being taught.

Literacy for Visually Impaired

A vision impaired person does not have the power to see and learn languages. Braille system of reading and writing can encourage literacy among these people. It is a system developed by a French man to help blind people to read and write. The system was based on a method developed by Charles Barbier, a captain in the French army, in response to Napoleon’s demand for a code that soldiers could use to communicate silently and without light at night called night writing. Louis Braille, of National Institute for the Blind in Paris, France adopted it and used 6 raised dots cells for in a rectangular manner such that human hands can move rapidly from one symbol to the other and read. This revolutionized written communication for the blind. Thus Braille system of communication has become the most popular way for reading and writing for the blind people. Braille method has various other uses like for people working in the dark etc. In India Delhi University has launched multi-purpose resource centre in Braille for benefit of the visually impaired students. Additionally various blind schools across the country also teach Braille system of reading and writing to the blind and deaf students.

Sports Academies in India

COMMENTS

The sports academies in India are few in number and concentrate on very few games. Perhaps cricket is the only exception. Cricket coaching camps are not only mushrooming in the cities but also in suburban areas. It is a common sight to see boys in the age group of 10-15 accompanied by their guardians and with their cricket kit returning or going to their coaching camp.

With the money involved in this game, more and more parents are admitting their sons in the cricket academies. A berth even in the State team can assure a handsome income for every match played. Further with the emergence of IPL and ICL tournaments more and more players of the local circuit are getting a chance to earn handsomely.

Football is one game which has wide acceptance and enthusiasm across India. Though there are a number of tournaments played in the local and national levels, footballers in India do not earn even a fraction of their cricketing counterparts. The lack of motivation and proper infrastructure are the reasons for the poor development of this sport in India. Apart from Tata Football Academy there is not another training football institute of repute. There is no reason of India not coming up to even the top Asian countries in football. A professional approach with the backing of the Central and State governments, or large private organizations could improve the level of football in India.

The same thing could be stated about hockey, India’s national game. The interest in this game among youngsters is gradually diminishing. These team games have the potential of doing well in the international level, subject to dedicated training and proper support.
