The price for Twitter and need for education

April 14, 2009 By: admin Category: Career Courses, Research, thoughts on education No Comments →

Recent research has shown that if we are bombarded by information from any source very frequently, we lose our ability to process the information correctly and our emotional quotient goes down. This means that we will be less able to feel the correct feeling when faced with a bit of information that is supposed to provoke some kind of emotion. Twitter is just an example. To an extent this is already happening. There is a dire need to improve our moral education standards at our schools. The morals should be so drilled in that when the child grows up, his moral compass does not fail him even once. In India, we have historically not done a good job. Hence for most students the moral compass has started to fail when faced with pressure from a fast changing liberalized economy. Do you know any place in India where this trend is being reversed? Please do let us know at Indiaedu.

IIT Bombay invite the global village for “ 10 Great Ideas to Change the World in the next 50 years”

April 14, 2009 By: admin Category: Research No Comments →

I had already heard that IIT Bombay has announced “ 10 Great Ideas to Change the World in the next 50 years” and I knew that it was meant for IIT Bombay alumni, staff and students. However, now the contest has been offered to the entire world. Any individual from any country over the age of 18 can participate in this contest and can send their ideas. In fact,a prize money of Rs 50 lakh has been announced for the 10 best ideas., to be allotted as per the merit of the idea. Godrej is sponsoring the project and also promises to help implement some of the ideas in reality. Deadline for entries is May 30 and the registration can be done on the official website of IIT Bombay. A special award is alloted for the best idea to make the world a safer place to live in. Awards will be announced in August this year. However, the biggest feature is that those presenting the best ideas will be invited to present a white paper at an international Round Table  Summit.

Undoubtedly, this event has full of promises for a major breakthrough in research. The entire global village is invited, so we never so brilliant research work may lite the world. Even more fascinating is the fact that this is a mass appeal across the world to make the world a better place to live in.

A national Nobel?

April 03, 2009 By: admin Category: Research, thoughts on education 1 Comment →

I was wondering if this could be an idea worth exploring or if it was an idea that has already been taken. The idea of a national level prize that is deliberately made high in stature. We already have the Bhatnagar prize for sterling research work in some sciences. However, if you think about it there is no Nobel-like corpus in India which will honor important contributions in varied fields like economics, liberal arts ,etc. In India, there is a separate award for literature and science which have gained in stature over time to be the gold standard. Is it that we do not have the money? A collective contribution from IT czars and other industry heavyweights should take care of any shortfall. I believe a strong agreement at the government level is required to accomplish this.

What are the rewards. By picking subjects, where basic research and originality is required, we might be able to slowly erase the malaise of following the west at some distant future date. Even if that does not happen, don’t you think you would feel proud if you told your kid ” Study hard and you will get the XYZ prize( not Nobel ,which is given by another country) one day” ? I would.

Want to hear from you. Let us know what you think at Indiaedu.

IIT- Kharagpur made the wonder needle that does not hurt

April 03, 2009 By: admin Category: Research No Comments →

The story is really amazing. We do not get hurt when mosquitoes bite us, it is the chemicals in its saliva that causes the irritation. Based on the same logic the researchers at IIT Kharagpur developed a painless injection that uses the same suction based pressure that a female mosquito uses to suck blood. The diameter of the microneedle is 30 micrometre. This injection will benefit patients who have to take several injections through out the day. Frequent repetitions of injection causes several physiological hazards including development of insertion pains.

A female mosquito sucks blood by flexing and relaxing certain muscles in its mouth. This creates suction that draws blood. The microneedle is based on the same technique. The sucking action is provided by a microeletromechanical pump. The patent of the injection is awaited. Already leading biomedical companies are approaching to enter into agreement to bring this device into market. IITs have always been excellent centre of research. The best of brains in the country work in these institutions. More funds should be invested in these institutions in order to upgrade them to the international standard. More scholarships and research fellowship should be provided to the students so that these institutions can create the largest and richest pool of researchers.
