May 14, 2009 By: admin Category: Preparation tips No Comments →

With the advent of privatizations and growth of the IT Sectors & BPO boom, nowadays life has become so fast that the young generation have become restless. So many lack the dedication and patience required to crack the civil services. They think big and try to earn big bucks even before stepping out of the college, so they mostly try for career options like jobs in the BPO sector, sales & marketing, while many opt for vocational courses like the hotel management, business management, fashion designing etc.

But compared to all other jobs, the civil services are still considered as the most prestigious of all careers in India. And cracking the exams is not a matter of joke but requires extreme dedication, hard-work & systematic study. The syllabus being vast and the questions unpredictable one should know what to prepare and how to begin. Choosing the right subject is the first key to planned study. Sociology, economics and even psychology can be viable options among the social science subjects. Sociology is usually preferred by students of the subjects or of allied subjects. NCERT books for classes XI & XII are the most preferred choice as it gives an idea about what topics to cover. Correspondence courses from the RAU’S IAS and study materials from IGNOU are extremely useful.

Apart from the social science subjects, commerce is usually preferred by the students who have these subjects at the graduation level. Commerce has four areas in the syllabus which are auditing, accounting, business organization and management. Those coming from the engineering background feel comfortable with subjects like physics or mathematics as their optional subjects.

Whatever subject you choose the best policy to start is by having a look at the syllabus and consulting the last 10 years questions. This often gives one the idea about whether to opt for the subject as optional subject or not. Choosing the right subject and an extensive study is the right approach to prepare.
