Police College of Finland-An Overview

The institute is situated in Tampere and is under the direct operation of the Ministry of the Interior. The institute selects students for its diploma and advanced studies. The training is provided in the Finnish and Swedish languages. The College was formed in 2008 when the two institutes Police College of Finland and National Police School merged. The institute has the duty for police training recruitment. Leadership training, and research and other necessary training required in the police field are provided at the institute. There are about 200 people employed out of whom 120 people are the staff who teaches the students enrolled in the college.

 

There are diploma and advanced programs taught in the college they are as follows: Finnish Police Sergeant’s Examination, Diploma in Police Studies, and Bachelor in Police Command.  The last program is a polytechnic level program. Founded in the year 1981, on 26th June Birsa Agricultural University has its primary aim as developing manpower and technologies in the field of agriculture. There are four colleges or faculty under this university they are faculty of agriculture, veterinary science & animal husbandry, faculty of forestry and college of biotechnology. UGC’S Credit Transfer System-An Educational Boon

University Grants Commission (UGC) has already initiated the process of finding an ‘Indian equivalence assessment and credit transfer system.’ Such a system will help in the smooth transfer of students to the universities in Indian and foreign countries.

UGC aims to build a common platform. The universities’ differ in the method of assessment of grades; parity needs to be developed. UGC will set forth a comprehensive model on which the transfer process will be evaluated.

Pandit Vidyasagar, who is the director of University of Pune’s board of college and university development (BCUD) said that such an initiative will ensure smooth transition between the universities sited at two different geographical locations. He has been asked to form a four member committee by UGC. They will be working on a model of credit-transfer which will reduce arbitrariness in the process of selection in universities. In a period of 6 months the committee will be finalizing on a credit-transfer model.

The committee has been formed with eminent personalities who are either academicians or scientists. H C Pradhan of the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Mumbai, Vijayshri of Indira Gandhi National Open University’s School of sciences and N. Subhash of the Centre for Earth Sciences Studies, Trivandrum, are the committee members.

IGNOU To Open Community Colleges

IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) unveiled its plan to open 100 community colleges in India on 4th July 2009. Rs 1,500 crore will be allocated for establishment of these colleges in the first year.

A community college is an educational institution which is accredited to award associate degree to the students. The community colleges under IGNOU will offer 2 year associate degree; after completion of the course the students can take transfer credit to regular colleges and enroll themselves in undergraduate programs.

V N R Rajasekharan Pillai, the IGNOU Vice Chancellor, said that they will strictly follow private participation mode. The amount to be invested for the programs will be spent by the IGNOU accredited colleges. 800 colleges have put forward their application for accreditation, out of which 100 has been selected by IGNOU.

The community colleges will offer the flexible choice of enrolling in full time or part time associate degree with a mandatory apprenticeship in the first year of the program. In the first year there will be foundation courses and application oriented courses, each of 16 credits. The second year will comprise electives of 8 credits, internship of 8 credits and project work of 16 credits.

M S Swaminathan, who is the chief architect of the projects, feels that IGNOU’s initiative will bring in a revolution in the education sector of India.
