UGC’S Credit Transfer System-An Educational Boon

July 06, 2009 By: admin Category: University & College, higher education abroad, thoughts on education No Comments →

University Grants Commission (UGC) has already initiated the process of finding an ‘Indian equivalence assessment and credit transfer system.’ Such a system will help in the smooth transfer of students to the universities in Indian and foreign countries.

UGC aims to build a common platform. The universities’ differ in the method of assessment of grades; parity needs to be developed. UGC will set forth a comprehensive model on which the transfer process will be evaluated.

Pandit Vidyasagar, who is the director of University of Pune’s board of college and university development (BCUD) said that such an initiative will ensure smooth transition between the universities sited at two different geographical locations. He has been asked to form a four member committee by UGC. They will be working on a model of credit-transfer which will reduce arbitrariness in the process of selection in universities. In a period of 6 months the committee will be finalizing on a credit-transfer model.

The committee has been formed with eminent personalities who are either academicians or scientists. H C Pradhan of the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Mumbai, Vijayshri of Indira Gandhi National Open University’s School of sciences and N. Subhash of the Centre for Earth Sciences Studies, Trivandrum, are the committee members.

The concept of academic credit and accreditation of USA Institutes

July 03, 2009 By: admin Category: higher education abroad 2 Comments →

Many Indian students are going abroad for further education at different Universities. Universities of USA are the most sought after destination for the Indian students since years. However many students seeking admission in the USA Universities are occasionally baffled by the jargons of accreditation and credit hours of USA Universities that are alien concepts for many Indian students.

Let me clear these confusions so as to make the jargons lucidly understood by the aspiring students who want to pursue their higher education in USA. In USA, a 15 week academic duration is known as semester. Most of the Universities in USA are comprised of 2 semesters per academic year. A 10 week long academic duration in USA Universities is known as quarter. Again a class that is comprised of 3 quarter credit hours is the same as that of a 2 semester credit hours. This is because there are few weeks in a quarter than in a semester.

The concept of accreditation is not clear to many students aspiring to go abroad for higher education. For the Universities in USA there are six regional accrediting organizations that are regionally based. These organizations offer recognition in all subject areas offered by a University. Furthermore a degree from an accredited University is given weight age in the professional field. I guess this information clears the concepts of accreditation and credit offerings by the Universities of USA.

Concordia University is Montreal, Canada awarded a doctoral degree to the co-founder of Infosys- Narayan Murthy. At a time when Indian students pursuing higher education abroad are bearing the brunt of racial discrimination, another country is felicitating an Indian. Critics smell a reason behind this. Is it Canada’s attempt to attract the attention of Indian students by awarding a doctoral degree to an Indian messiah? Several Indian students have opted for Canada owing to the learning atmosphere and opportunities available in the country. But has the racial attacks meted out to Indian students in Australia be a leverage for Canada to persuade the learning community of India? In New Delhi, an easy documentation project for Indian students is also being initiated by the Canadian High Commission to make the student visa procedure easier. In terms of drawing Indian students will Australia’s loss become Canada’s gain? In a time of economic turbulence and the aftermath of the reports about racial attacks, it might take a toll on plans of overseas education.
