Career as an Economist

Economics is one of the traditional subjects which has universal application. There is no area of activity where economics does not play a role. Economics deals with allocation and distribution of resources both of natural and artificial forms. The resources available are either primary, i.e. minerals in ore form, agricultural produce, fisheries and dairy products.

The secondary or manufacturing sector is perhaps the most demanding area for an economist. The manufacturing sector utilizes resources of primary sector to produce goods by using technology and human resources. The tertiary sector is an extension of the secondary sector. All service industries and commercial organizations fall within this category. In recent years, with growth of market economy it has become important to plan production and business strategies well in advance. Most multinational companies, large conglomerates, and multi location business houses appoint economists or economic advisors to provide production and marketing guidelines.

Economists are also in great demand in planning commission and advisory boards of government departments. Research institutes and data interpretation organizations also require economists. Development authorities are among the biggest employers of economics scholars. Developmental economics is a vital area in an underdeveloped or developing economy as India. At each and every step an economist’s advice is sought. In matters of education and poverty eradication an economist is the best person to advice.
