Different views on education

September 10, 2009 By: admin Category: Institutional Education No Comments →

Throughout the ages the greatest minds in the history of humanity have had differing views on institutionalized education or rather its utility or need in human lives. Mahatma Gandhi had said that the modern day system of institutionalized education is basically not as useful as it should be as it does not serve a main purpose for a majority of Indian population at his time. He had cited the example of a common Indian peasant saying that they are already aware of what has to be done with their lives and how to earn their livelihood. He has opined that institutionalized education should not be made mandatory as India already had a school system at place and there was no need for a new system at his time.

However, there have been other views as well. Nelson Mandela, the celebrated Nobel Laureate from South Africa has said that education plays an important part as far as effecting changes on a world level is concerned. In fact, in spite of Gandhi’s stance there have been many takers within India itself who have advocated the need of making education available to the various sections of the Indian diaspora. These changes highlight that times, and with it, the demands are changing.

Education, in any form or shape can play an important part in the development of India as a country. It can help the country tide over the rough times and do better with regard to every aspect of human existence. Children in every nook and corner have to be exposed to modern day education for a better tomorrow – a better India.
